We took the matter of medical documentation seriously and launched three decades ago a major research project entitled ‘The Sudan Health Trilogy’, for which we solicited the help of teams of co-workers, co-authors, fieldworkers, and editors. The trilogy includes first a Biographical Dictionary of Health Care Professionals in Sudan. This dictionary will be a Who is Who of Sudanese health care professionals (medical doctors, pharmacists, dentists and researchers) and expatriate staff, namely Britons who have served in health care institutions or contributed to health and medicine in service and research in Sudan in the first 75 years of the 20th century. Each biographical entry will describe an individual as faithfully and accurately as available data permits. This work will require extensive information from each person or family of deceased persons to be collected and edited before each profile is accurate and inclusive. This project is ongoing. The second part of the trilogy is the Pioneers of Sudanese Medicine series, which profiles the individuals whose achievements were seminal to the field’s evolution and whose work has contributed significantly to the medical profession’s establishment and development. Some men and women had ventured into the medical field before others, into new specialities, researched the area, or made discoveries or techniques. They collectively set honourable traditions and established a firm foundation for health care delivery, research, teaching and training; they have taught and trained several generations and, more importantly, mentored and provided guidance and encouragement to the young and aspiring generations. The pioneers were, without exception, meticulous clinicians, imaginative and illustrious teachers, and hard-working researchers. Moreover, they maintained unimpeachable professional integrity, upheld strict medical ethics, and set admirable behaviour models in their exemplary lives. More than two hundred profiles were already prepared, and several were published in a standalone book, pamphlets or Blog: حكاوي طبية سودانية.The third part of the trilogy is this Bibliography of Biomedical Literature of Sudan in the 20th century and beyond. It is a compilation of medical literature produced by Sudanese and expatriate doctors, pharmacists, biomedical scientists and scholars during the 20th century and beyond in all fields of medicine, health sciences and related applied and social sciences in all languages, whether conducted in Sudan or abroad, whether directly related to Sudan, or non-Sudanese subjects but authored or co-authored by Sudanese scholars. The bibliography is envisaged to include in addition to published material, ‘grey literature,’ i.e., technical reports, white papers, drafts, departmental manuals, conference papers and proceedings, relevant articles in newspapers, raw data, memoranda, project summaries, trip reports, working and discussion papers, books, manuals, unofficial government documents, studies, market surveys, pamphlets, brochures and newsletters. In addition, this bibliography includes the citations of the biomedical material that has been published (scientific articles, books and book chapters) and unpublished documents (postgraduate dissertations, technical reports, white papers, manuscripts, newsletters, departmental manuals, memoranda, project summaries, pamphlets, magazine articles), conference and workshop papers, abstracts and proceedings.
